Product details
Author: M.I.A.
Release Date: 24-08-2007
Details: Starting a near revolution with her 2005 debut, Arular, M.I.A. returns to keep the global partyjumping with her very much anticipated follow-up, KALA, hitting the street via XL Recordings. M.I.A.’s boundary free mix of sounds and styles has put her far ahead of the curve in a genre that defies classification, but has helped ignite the crossover club scene we all now enjoy. Beginning work on the new album immediately after completing her Arular tour, Maya used a diverse selection of producers to help with the global feel of KALA: the Nigerian rapper Afrikan Boy rhymes on the raving "Hussel", The Wilcannia Mob appear on the didgeridoo beat of "Mango Pickle Down River", super-producer Timbaland crops up on album closer, "Come Around", and Blaqstarr on “The Turn” Arular-alum Diplo returns on KALA, as does $witch, who was a constant companion of M.I.A.’s as she travelled to Trinidad, Jamaica, Australia, Japan and beyond for sessions. In India she worked with the South Asian answer to Timbaland, A.R. Rahman, and several top Bollywood producers. Critical Praise for M.I.A- KALA: “There’s nothing out there that sounds like Kala, which is a compliment one can pay all too rarely to recordings these days.” - Toronto Star - Album of the Week 3.5 out of 4 “Kala is the total package...a rivetting soundtrack to the street.” - The Victoria Times 4.5 out of 5 “(The album) fuses even more genres, influences and cultures for a spicy sambar of dancefloor rockers and headphone symphonies. Kala should find it’s way onto most top 10 lists at year’s end.” - Calgary Herald 5 out of 5"This album comes in like a lion; in the middle, lion eats lamb; then, at the end, walks out pumping its lion fist in the air." - Ottawa Xpress "Rather than a sharp left turn, or a mercenary bid for mainstream acceptance, Kala emerges as the surefooted sequel to Arular's righteous, cutting-edge cool. It's another groundbreaking album that challenges and provokes, while keeping the hooks front and centre." - Montréal Gazette
